A guide to the holiday of Kwanzaa by its creator Dr. Maulana Karenga, who established the tradition in 1966, explaining its origins, values, and symbolism for a general audience “outside the movement” for the first time.

In addition to his writings and the creation of Kwanzaa, Dr Maulana Karenga is a professor and chair of Africana Studies at California State University, Long Beach, with doctorates in political science with focus on the theory and practice of nationalism (United States International University) and social ethics with a focus on the classical African ethics of ancient Egypt (University of Southern California). He also founded the publisher of this book and others, The University of Sankore Press, named for the historic Sankore Madrasa founded in the fourteenth century in Northern Africa in Timbuktu, Mali.
